Zoho Cliq pros and cons

Pros

  • Free plan supports unlimited users with 100 GB storage, far more generous than Slack's free tier
  • Paid Unlimited tier at $3 per user is roughly a third of Slack's comparable plan
  • Unlimited message history on the paid plan, where Slack's free tier hides older messages
  • Group audio and video included rather than sold separately
  • Multi-conversation view lets power users watch several channels at once, genuinely useful for busy operators
  • Native connections to Zoho CRM, Desk, and Projects so records surface inside conversations

Cons

  • Third-party app ecosystem is a fraction of Slack's, which is the main reason teams stay on Slack
  • Only 104 third-party reviews, modest for a communication tool a whole company depends on
  • Adoption is the real risk, chat tools live or die on whether people actually move
  • Deepest value assumes you're running other Zoho apps
  • Best per-user pricing requires annual billing
  • Interface is functional rather than polished next to Slack

Zoho Cliq review: a closer look

What Zoho Cliq is

Zoho Cliq is team chat (channels, direct messages, file sharing, audio and video calls) positioned as the affordable alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams. The free plan is the headline: unlimited users and 100 GB of storage, where Slack's free tier restricts message history in a way that pushes growing teams to pay. Paid Unlimited is $3 per user against Slack's considerably higher comparable rate. For a business where chat is a cost center rather than a platform, that gap is worth examining.

The free tier is the strongest argument

Slack's free plan hides messages beyond a rolling window, which is precisely the constraint that converts teams to paying; you lose your own history. Cliq's free plan gives unlimited users and 100 GB, and while it lacks the paid tier's unlimited history and larger meetings, it's a genuinely workable product for a small team rather than a limited trial. For a business of five to fifteen people that needs a chat tool but cannot justify a per-seat subscription for it, this is a real answer, and one of very few in the category.

The ecosystem gap is the honest weakness

Slack's dominance is not really about the chat, which is a solved problem; it's about the thousands of integrations and the fact that every SaaS product ships a Slack app first. Cliq connects well to Zoho apps and adequately to the common ones, but if your workflow depends on a specific tool posting into a channel, check that it exists before switching. This is the single most likely reason a team trials Cliq and returns to Slack, and it's worth auditing your actual integration list rather than assuming parity.

Adoption is the risk that isn't about features

Communication tools are unusual in that the best product frequently loses to the incumbent, because the cost of switching isn't the subscription; it's asking every person to change where they talk, move their history, and rebuild their habits. A team that grumbles its way onto a cheaper tool and keeps drifting back to email has cost you more than the saving. If your team likes Slack, the $3-versus-$8 arithmetic understates what you're really trading. If your team is currently on nothing, or on something they dislike, that resistance disappears and Cliq becomes an easy win.

How it compares

Against Slack, Slack wins on ecosystem, polish, and the fact that most people already know it, at several times the price; Cliq wins on cost and on Zoho integration. Against Microsoft Teams, Teams is effectively free if you already pay for Microsoft 365, which makes it the default for Microsoft shops regardless of merit. Against Google Chat, similar logic applies for Google Workspace customers. Against Mattermost or Rocket.Chat, those are the self-hosted options for teams with data-residency requirements and someone to run them. Cliq's clearest case is a Zoho business that isn't already committed to Microsoft or Google.

Who should use Zoho Cliq?

A good fit

Zoho Cliq fits small and mid-sized teams that need proper team chat without a per-seat subscription they'd struggle to justify, and especially businesses already running Zoho apps where CRM and Desk records surface inside conversations. The free tier makes it one of the few genuinely viable no-cost options for a growing team that wants to keep its message history.

Look elsewhere if…

Teams whose workflows depend on a wide range of third-party integrations should stay on Slack and pay for it. Businesses already paying for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace effectively have Teams or Chat included and should use them. Organizations with data-residency requirements needing self-hosting should look at Mattermost. And any team that already likes its current chat tool should think hard before spending goodwill on a migration to save a few dollars a seat.

The verdict

4.6/ 5 · Capterra rating

Zoho Cliq is a legitimately good-value chat tool whose free plan (unlimited users, 100 GB, retained history) is more useful than Slack's, and whose $3 paid tier undercuts the market substantially. For a Zoho business, or any team that hasn't already standardized on Slack or Teams, it's well worth a trial. The two things that decide against it are structural rather than qualitative: the third-party integration library is much smaller, so audit your must-haves before switching, and chat migrations fail on adoption rather than features. If your team is already happy somewhere, the saving probably isn't worth the disruption.
